Affordable housing advocate pushes for Hochul’s SEQR reforms

If we're going to effectively address the affordability crisis in New York and the Hudson Valley, we need to make it less costly to invest in housing, jobs and infrastructure. SEQRA reform is a good step in that direction.

Gov. Kathy Hochul is attempting to address the high cost of building affordable housing in her executive budget. Specifically, she wants to reform the state’s environmental review process (SEQR), which requires government agencies to consider the environmental impacts of construction.

It's a budget proposal that Carlina Rivera, president and CEO of the New York State Association for Affordable Housing, supports.

“When SEQR was established, it was a laudable goal: To prevent environmental damage, establish a standardized review of projects while providing the public a voice,” Rivera said. “That would still happen with these new proposals under Gov. Kathy Hochul in terms of what she wants to reform SEQR.”
