WMCHealth Cuts Ribbon for Behavioral Health Center of Excellence

WMCHealth cut the ribbon on the renovated and expanded Behavioral Health Center of Excellence at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, increasing inpatient behavioral health capacity from 40 to 60 beds while awaiting final regulatory approvals. The project, supported by a $3 million investment from Dutchess County, is intended to strengthen local mental health and substance use services, improve access to inpatient care, and restore WMCHealth’s pre-pandemic inpatient psychiatric capacity.

The renovated Spellman Unit includes updated patient rooms and common areas, more natural light, modernized materials intended to reduce stress, a patient comfort room, expanded group activity and therapy space, and upgraded safety and security features. WMCHealth now offers 80 inpatient behavioral health beds across Dutchess and Ulster counties and says the Center of Excellence will support emergency, inpatient, outpatient, and addiction treatment services close to home.

Commentary

High-quality healthcare resources are essential to regional competitiveness. Like strong schools, safe communities, housing options, and reliable infrastructure, access to advanced healthcare services makes the Hudson Valley more attractive to employers, developers, families, and other economic development stakeholders.

WMCHealth’s investment in expanded behavioral health capacity is especially important because mental health and addiction needs directly affect residents, families, workplaces, and the broader regional economy. By strengthening access to care close to home, the Behavioral Health Center of Excellence can help improve community well-being, support workforce stability, and contribute to the overall health and vitality of the Hudson Valley.
