IBM Commits $10 Billion To Quantum Computing

This investment can help transform the Hudson Valley into "Tech Valley," creating an ecosystem of economic activity around the international leader in quantum computing - the next major evolution of the global technology market.

IBM announced plans to invest more than $10 billion in quantum computing over the next five years, funding research and development, capital expenditures, manufacturing scale-up, ecosystem partnerships, and mergers and acquisitions. The investment is intended to accelerate IBM’s roadmap toward large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computing, including its goal of delivering IBM Quantum Starling in 2029, followed by IBM Quantum Blue Jay.

IBM says it operates more than 90 quantum systems globally, has a network of more than 340 quantum clients and partners, and has signed more than $1.1 billion in quantum-related contracts since 2017. The announcement also builds on IBM’s planned Anderon quantum foundry and reinforces the company’s view that quantum computing is moving from research toward commercial and industrial application.

Commentary

IBM’s quantum ecosystem in New York is becoming a powerful three-node innovation corridor: research and development in Yorktown Heights, quantum systems and operations in Poughkeepsie, and quantum chip fabrication and foundry capacity in Albany. That gives the Hudson Valley region a real opportunity to become the Tech Valley corridor originally envisioned.

IBM is positioned to be one of the world’s major quantum computing players, with more than $10 billion committed to quantum over the next five years and a roadmap toward large-scale, fault-tolerant systems. Now the region needs to build the ecosystem around it: application developers, domestic manufacturing and supply chains, service providers, workforce pipelines, higher education partnerships, commercialization support, startup activity, and business attraction strategies.

The next era of computing will not be built by one company alone. It will require a full regional ecosystem — and the Hudson Valley should help lead it.
